What to do when your VW key snaps
Do not push the broken piece deeper, do not try tweezers or glue, and do not force the lock with the remaining half of the key. Every one of those moves makes extraction harder and risks damaging the lock itself.
If part of the blade is sticking out, leave it exactly as it is. If the piece is fully inside, do not touch it at all. Then call 07367 634032 and keep the broken-off handle — it often helps us cut the new key.
How extraction works
We use specialist extraction tools designed to grip the broken blade inside the lock without scratching or spreading the internal parts. The piece is drawn out along the path it went in, leaving the lock working as before.
The whole process is done at your car — no need to remove the lock or take anything apart in most cases.
A new key after extraction
Once the broken piece is out, we cut you a fresh key. The snapped blade usually gives us the cuts we need; if it is too damaged, we work from the lock or the car itself. The transponder chip is programmed fresh and the remote synced.
The new key is tested in the ignition and door locks before we leave, so you drive away with full confidence in it.
VW models we help with broken keys
Broken-key extractions come up across the Volkswagen range, from the Golf and Polo through to the Tiguan, Passat, T-Roc, Touareg, Up, Caddy and Transporter. Older high-mileage blades are the most common culprits, but any key can snap under the wrong twist.
If your remaining spare is also worn, we can cut a fresh one at the same visit and save you a second callout.
Frequently asked questions
My VW key snapped in the ignition — can you get it out?
In most cases, yes. We use specialist extraction tools that grip the broken piece without harming the lock, then cut a new key from the pieces or from your car.
Should I try to pull the broken piece out myself?
It is best not to. Tweezers, glue and force usually push the piece deeper or damage the lock, which turns a simple extraction into a bigger repair.
Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?
Often, yes. The broken blade usually gives us the cuts we need, and we program the chip fresh. If the pieces are too damaged, we work from the car itself.
What documents do I need for a broken key extraction?
Photo ID and proof the Volkswagen belongs to you — the V5C logbook or other paperwork with your name on it. We check this before removing the broken piece.
How much does broken VW key extraction cost?
Extraction plus a new cut key is quoted as one job, priced on your VW model and key type. Call or WhatsApp 07367 634032 for a clear quote before we set out.
